FAQs - Minnesota Granite Contractors
Does granite cost more than engineered stone?
Not always, on many occasions granite will cost less.
Will granite scratch easily?
Granite is extremely hard and requires the use of diamond products to fabricate. There for it is very resistant to scratches.
Is there a warranty on granite countertops?
The Rockford Granite Company Inc. offers a one year installation and fabrication warranty on your countertops. We guarantee them to be free of defects as a result of the manufacture and installation. Exterior applications are not covered due to the climate in MN.
Can I do the installation myself?
It is not recommended but we have had some customers do so. If you chose to do so after we try and talk you out of it you are solely responsible for the product once it leaves our facility.
What is the turn around time?
From time of order to completion of installation is typically 2-3 weeks. This can vary depending on work loads. It is important to remember that an installation date given to you is only good if you promptly complete the required paperwork.
Where does granite come from?
Granite comes from quarries all over the world. Brazil and India are major importers but some stone comes from as close as right here in Minnesota.
Will I have seems and if so where will they go?
We try very hard to avoid seems for two reasons. It can increase the speed of installation and add to the overall appearance. The reality of it is that most jobs will require a seem. We place them based on kitchen layout and slab usage. We can discuss this with you if you are concerned.
Do I need a plumber or electrician to connect or reconnect anything?
Yes, one of the most common misunderstandings is about your plumbing. We are not licensed to do either electrical or plumbing work there for our insurance will not cover us for that type of work. If we are tearing out your old tops all plumbing must be disconnected before we arrive. Our crews can not reconnect the plumbing when we are done either. The same is true of any electrical work.
Are you insured?
Yes, we carry a $2,000,000 dollar liability policy to protect your
home in the unlikely event we damage something. We have never had to
use it as of yet.
Bacteria
Granite does not harbor bacteria. Granite has and continues
to be approved for not only food preparation but medical
applications as well. The center for disease control has no record
of granite harboring bacteria to the date of this writing. The
Hospitality Institute of Technology & Management (HTIM)
has done a study on this subject and their results can be found on
their website.
Radon
Radon can be found in granite in very minute traces, just like it can be
found in your concrete as well as some other building materials. The levels are
very minute and dissipate rapidly.
